A skin tag is an excess of skin tissue that hangs off the skin as a flap with a connecting stalk. They are most commonly found in body folds such as the neck, armpits, under the breast, and groin area. They can also be found on the back and chest. Skin tags are more common in women than in men, in the elderly, and in people with a high BMI. Skin tags are usually painless. They will become irritated if anything rubs against them, such as clothing, jewelry, or skin. Skin tag removal may be a one-time procedure, but if an individual has multiple skin tags, they will be removed in more than one sitting. The procedure takes 45-90 minutes depending on the number of lesions. Because skin tags are superficial lesions, scarring is unlikely. Pigmentary changes such as hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation may occur and usually resolve on their own after a few months. Skin tags are associated with aging, so they may reappear after a few years. Sun protection is recommended to prevent the recurrence of those lesions.
