Pigmentation disorders are frequently diagnosed, assessed, and treated in primary care settings. Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, solar lentigines, ephelides (freckles), and café au lait macules are examples of common hyperpigmentation disorders. These conditions are generally harmless, but they can be upsetting for patients. When necessary, a dermatologic history, skin examination, and skin biopsy can help rule out the melanoma and its precursors. Hyperpigmentation is treated with topical agents, chemical peels, cryotherapy, light or laser therapy, or a combination of these methods, in addition to addressing the underlying condition. Pigmentation disorders of the skin are a common occurrence in primary care. Although they are frequently benign and easily distinguished by appearance and location, a skin biopsy may be required to rule out the melanoma and its precursors. Some disorders cause the patient to have cosmetic or psychological issues, necessitating evaluation and treatment. A correct diagnosis enables the physician to facilitate appropriate skin treatment, provide reassurance, or initiate an appropriate referral.
